:: Greenhouses without Heating or Irrigation
+ 13.10.2010 + Have you ever wondered how to make use of dry and sparse coastal regions for agriculture?
Greenhouses are a way to produce an artificial hot and humid climate, but they require a lot of fresh water and pesticides.
Charlie Paton, a designer from the UK, has developed a greenhouse for an unproductive piece of land close to the Moroccan coastline, which uses a sea water pipe, two simple evaporators and the heat of the sun.
The inside of the greenhouse is an imitation of the natural hydrological circle of evaporation and condensation as it is found all over the world.
The result is a rather cool and humid climate where crops can grow without stress, thus more resistant against vermin.
This system works in coastal regions worldwide and can be combined with other industries. Besides agricultural produce, high quality salt can be obtained and the waste heat of solar plants can be used for the greenhouse.
