:: Lights out New York at midnight during fall migration

+ 26.09.2010 + Fall migration is here and NYC Audubon is reminding all New Yorkers to turn off their lights. From September 1st to November 1st, midnight until dawn.

Whether you're in a skyscraper or studio apartment everyone is encouraged to get involved! Lights out... or out like a light!

This fall marks the fifth year of Lights Out New York, an initiative that encourages owners of tall buildings to save the lives of night-migrating birds while reducing energy costs.

An estimated 90,000 birds are killed every year in New York City by colliding with glass in buildings as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds. Many are disoriented by the illuminated structures as the bright light overrides their natural navigational cues. Save money and energy as you save lives.

Lights Out New York is sponsored and organized by New York City Audubon, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Building Owners and Managers Association of New York and the Real Estate Board of New York.

Participants include: the Time Warner Center, Rockefeller Center, the Chrysler building, 601 Lexington Avenue (formerly known as Citigroup Center), Silverstein Properties, 787 Seventh Avenue and the Durst Organization. More buildings are joining us every hour!
