:: Minesto Tidal Energy
+ 08.03.2011 + Deep Green has the unique capability to increase current market potential with 80 %.
The Deep Green technology converts energy from tidal stream flows into electricity by way of a novel principle, somewhat similar to the posture of a wind kite. The kite assembly, consisting of a wing and turbine, is attached by a tether to a fixed point on the ocean bed.
The technology offered by Minesto is lightweight and miniature compared to other tidal solutions. Resulting in cost savings in material, transport, installation, service and maintenance place Minesto in a unique position, both economically and in terms of number of available sites.
Deep Green can operate cost efficiently at sites with low current velocities and large depths, therefore able to significantly expand total size of the global market for marine energy. Studies indicate that Minesto’s technology is the only one that can utilize 40 percent of the high-potential areas in a cost-efficient manner.
Tidal Power more
The kinetic energy in water flowing at 5 knots (2.5 m/s) is more than in a 260 km/hr wind, as seawater is 832 times denser than air. Storms are temporary- tides continuous.
Deep Green Technology more
The kite consists of a wing, which is provided with a turbine and a generator, attached to the seabed by a tether. Hydrodynamic forces on the kite caused by the current velocity makes the kite to move and by a control system it is taken in a certain trajectory. The speed of the kite determines the flow velocity to the turbine, which is increased by about ten times the current speed.
The electricity is transmitted onshore through a power cable inside the tether. With a wing span of 12 m the kite is designed to run at a speed of 16 m/s at a current velocity around 1.6 m/s. Animated movie
Benefits
Deep Green offers several competitive advantages:
- Low current velocities; Deep Green operates economically in deep waters at low velocities, thus the number of suitable sites are huge;
- Robust anchorage system since no tower is needed;
- Low maintenance cost since only attachment and detachment has to be done offshore;
- Minimal visual and environmental impact; Minesto is always at 20 meters or more below the water surface;
- Predictability. Tidal currents are extremely regular;
- Small and low weight, less than 7 tons per unit, 500kW;
- Gearless turbine - generator system;
- Good overall economy
