:: Obama releases progress report on American energy plan

+ 19.03.2012 + Production of electricity from wind, solar and geothermal sources has nearly doubled since 2008.

On March 12th, 2012 the Administration of U.S. President Barack Obama released a progress report on its strategy for American energy production and use, which notes that production of electricity from wind, solar and geothermal sources has nearly doubled in the nation since 2008.

"The blueprint for a secure energy future progress report" places its primary emphasis on American energy independence, including expanded domestic oil and gas production and reducing petroleum use in part through new fuel economy standards. However it also outlines the administration's work in supporting clean energy development.

"The Obama Administration has made the largest investment in clean energy in history and the United States has nearly doubled renewable energy generation since 2008," stated the report.

"In fact, last year, according to industry experts, the United States reclaimed the title as the world’s leading investor in clean energy technologies, besting countries like China, India, and Germany."

Solar gains an increasing share of non-hydro renewable output

Citing Energy Information Administration (EIA) data, the report includes a chart which shows a steady annual increase in solar, wind and geothermal generation to almost 150 TWh in 2011. Most of this increase comes from wind, but an increasing share comes from solar photovoltaic (PV) generation.

In the report, the administration also emphasized its policy initiatives, including the U.S. Department of Energy's loan guarantee program, which has supported dozens of large solar photovoltaic (PV) projects.

The report additionally notes the administration's work on simplifying clean energy permitting on public lands, and emphasizes attempts to increase budgets for clean energy research and development and eliminate USD 4 billion in fossil fuel subsidies.
