Prominent Appeal from Society: Disarmament Instead of Armament

In a clear and urgent call for disarmament, an unusual broad social alliance appeals to the public.

These include Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen, the Trade Union Chairpersons Reiner Hoffmann (DGB), Frank Bsirske (ver.di), Michaela Rosenberger (NGG) and Marlis Tepe (GEW), Theologist Margot Käßmann, leading representatives of the environmental movement such as DNR Chairman Kai Niebert and the BUND Chairman Hubert Weiger, scientists including Gesine Schwan, Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, Frigga Haug and Ulrich Brand, politicians from three parties such as the members of the German parliament (Bundestag) Ernst Röspel (SPD), Katja Kipping (DIE LINKE.) and Katja Keul (Bündnis90/die Grünen), persons engaged in the cultural sector such as Wolfgang Niedecken, Udo Lindenberg, Renan Demirkan and Franz Alt (Journalist), as well as activists from the peace movement.

They call in concern for the future development of our country from the (new) government:

“No increase in military expenditure – disarming is the order of the day“

With the appeal, the signatories warn against further armament and demand to finally disarm – this is the only way to solve the big challenges. The call states:

„The German Federal Government plans to nearly double the military spending to two percent of German economic output (GDP). So it was agreed in NATO.

Two percent, or at least a further 30 billion euros, that are missing in the civilian sector. This includes schools and daycare centers, social housing, hospitals, public transportation, municipal infrastructure, retirement provisions, ecological reconstruction, climate justice, and international aid for empowerment and capacity building.”

More than the initial 90 signatories strongly warn that:

The military does not solve problems. Stop it. An alternative policy is needed.

We want to start with this: stop military rearmament, reduce tensions, build mutual trust, create perspectives for development and social security, a détente policy also with Russia, negotiate and disarm. These insights will be spread throughout our society. We want to help avert a new Cold War.”

Starting today, the signatories of the appeal call for a nationwide signature campaign (online and offline), which they want to combine with other activities.
