UK Calls on Advisory Body to Scope ‘Zero Emissions’ Climate Target

This morning Claire Perry, UK Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, asked the Committee on Climate Change to review the country’s 2050 greenhouse gas target in light of the latest climate science, indicating that the country may be on its way to set a net zero emissions target that would align with the Paris Agreement.

Following is a statement from Andrew Steer, president & CEO, World Resources Institute:

“In becoming the first G7 country to announce a path towards net zero emissions, the United Kingdom is demonstrating global leadership. The UK has also shown that reducing emissions can be achieved while delivering strong economic growth. Since 1990, its economy has grown by two-thirds, as it has reduced emissions by 41%. These actions should inspire other countries to make the transformational shifts necessary to achieve the ambition of the Paris Agreement.”
