{"id":114437,"date":"2026-05-05T09:03:44","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T07:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sonnenseite.com\/?p=114437"},"modified":"2026-05-05T09:03:44","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T07:03:44","slug":"toxic-solar-panels-cleaned-to-bring-them-indoors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sonnenseite.com\/en\/science\/toxic-solar-panels-cleaned-to-bring-them-indoors\/","title":{"rendered":"Toxic solar panels cleaned to bring them indoors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Safer and more environmentally friendly indoor solar panels could soon help power electronics in homes and offices, thanks to University of Queensland researchers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of chemical engineers\u202fled by UQ\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/about.uq.edu.au\/experts\/21555\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Miaoqiang Lyu<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/about.uq.edu.au\/experts\/1479\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Lianzhou Wang<\/a> have developed a new fabrication method that eliminates the need for toxic lead and other hazardous solvents in perovskite indoor solar panels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndoor solar cells themselves are not new, but the power conversion efficiency of the commercial silicon-based technology is only around 10 per cent,\u201d Dr Lyu said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHalide perovskites are an emerging technology that could replace silicon, offering much higher efficiencies and commercial potential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, most still rely on lead-based hazardous materials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe technology we developed eliminates those materials while still delivering high efficiency.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>UQ PhD student <a href=\"https:\/\/aibn.uq.edu.au\/profile\/12442\/zitong-wang\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zitong Wang<\/a>, who is under the supervision of Dr Lyu and Professor Wang, developed a safe and scalable vapour-based manufacturing process for fabricating high-quality lead-free perovskite material with fewer performance-limiting defects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indoor perovskite solar cells operate under low-intensity artificial light, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and fluorescent lamps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the new method, the panels achieved an efficiency of 16.36 per\u202fcent \u2014 the highest reported for this type of lead-free perovskite indoor solar cell made using an industry-compatible evaporation method.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis material has very attractive properties that can absorb indoor light and convert very weak indoor light efficiently into electricity,\u201d Dr Lyu said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy removing those solvents entirely, the process is much better suited to scalable manufacturing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lead-free perovskite indoor solar cells are also increasingly viewed as an alternative to coin-cell and button batteries for low-power electronics like environmental sensors, wearables, medical and health monitoring devices, and small consumer electronics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supermarkets trialling battery-powered electronic shelf labels, which replace thousands of paper price tickets and reduce manual labour, are among the potential early applications of the technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWith suitable voltage management, these devices can replace coin\u2011cell batteries, reducing the number of small batteries that end up as waste\u202for in children\u2019s toys,\u201d Dr Lyu said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Panels fabricated using the UQ process are thin, scalable and can be made on flexible plastic and in different shapes, making them easy to integrate into a wide range of products.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is sealing the panels before further testing.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the key here is encapsulation, to protect the material from oxygen and moisture,\u201d Dr Lyu said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople will probably see perovskite indoor panels and integrated consumer electronics in the market in the next few years.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acsenergylett.5c04174\">The research paper<\/a> is published in <em>ACS Energy Letters.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collaboration and acknowledgements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Lyu is an ARC Future Fellow at <a href=\"https:\/\/chemeng.uq.edu.au\/\">UQ\u2019s School of Chemical Engineering<\/a> whose research group focuses on advanced optoelectronic materials.
