This Week the Australian government revealed its proposed emissions reduction target of 26 to 28 per cent reduction on 2005 levels by 2030.

This level of effort fails to rise to the climate challenge and lags well behind its peers.

David Waskow, International Climate Director, World Resources Institute says: “Australia’s weak climate proposal is out of step with the global community. The country is falling further behind its peers with this unfortunate stance on climate change.

“Australia’s discouraging 2030 climate target is at odds with the severe risks the country faces from climate impacts, such as droughts and wildfires. The proposal stands in contrast with the more credible commitments made by the European Union, the United States and others thus far.

“If the proposal stands as-is, other countries will have to pick up Australia’s slack to tackle climate change — including many developing countries with fewer resources.

“We need steadfast leadership from all countries to forge an ambitious global climate agreement this December. In the months ahead, Australia still has the opportunity to show the world it is serious about combating the climate crisis.”
