{"id":61498,"date":"2020-08-11T07:44:43","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T05:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sonnenseite.com\/?p=61498"},"modified":"2020-08-11T07:44:44","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T05:44:44","slug":"challenging-plans-to-deploy-pv-on-dikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sonnenseite.com\/en\/science\/challenging-plans-to-deploy-pv-on-dikes\/","title":{"rendered":"Challenging plans to deploy PV on dikes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dutch researchers are trying to determine whether large-scale PV projects can be deployed on flood-control dikes across the Netherlands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 5 MW solar project has already been built on a dike near Groningen, but the researchers believe there is potential to build up to 2.9 GW of PV on such embankments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dutch authorities are struggling to identify surfaces on which to deploy large-scale PV plants due to the limited availability of land. In recent years, research institutes and private companies across the densely populated country have tried to prove the feasibility of solar projects on surfaces that do not damage agricultural land, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2020\/06\/11\/facade-solar-panels-with-mimic-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rooftops<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2019\/02\/20\/bifacial-modules-ridin-down-the-highway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">road noise barriers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2020\/06\/09\/implementing-standards-in-floating-pv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">onshore<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2018\/02\/07\/dutch-consortium-plans-worlds-first-off-shore-floating-pv-plant-for-the-north-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offshore<\/a> water surfaces, and&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2018\/09\/26\/netherlands-to-test-viability-of-solar-roads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bike lanes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the country also has 3,500 km of dikes that could be used for PV. This is the goal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2019\/02\/27\/the-promised-land-of-floating-pv-now-has-guidelines-for-proper-deployment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dutch Foundation for Applied Water Research (STOWA)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tno.nl\/en\/focus-areas\/energy-transition\/roadmaps\/towards-ubiquitous-solar-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO)<\/a>, which are working on a joint research project to determine how much PV can be installed on such surfaces, and at what economic and environmental cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Initial project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developers have already installed a 5 MW solar array on a dike near Groningen. \u201cThis dike has no water-barrier function anymore,\u201d Maarten D\u00f6renk\u00e4mper, a researcher at TNO, told <strong>pv magazine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dutch water authorities are currently reluctant to give permits for the construction of PV systems on dikes, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe outcome of our research project should give the water authorities more tools to assess a permit application,\u201d D\u00f6renk\u00e4mper said, noting that such projects would likely inject power into the grid. However, self consumption may also be considered, especially for water-pumping systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00f6renk\u00e4mper said economic feasibility can be achieved. \u201cThis will depend on the specific location, where the project is planned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PV systems may need to be constructed in ways that improve the original functionality of the dikes.
