{"id":89484,"date":"2023-03-03T06:10:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T05:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sonnenseite.com\/?p=89484"},"modified":"2023-03-03T12:31:34","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T11:31:34","slug":"global-co2-emissions-rose-less-than-initially-feared-in-2022-as-clean-energy-growth-offset-much-of-the-impact-of-greater-coal-and-oil-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sonnenseite.com\/en\/environment\/global-co2-emissions-rose-less-than-initially-feared-in-2022-as-clean-energy-growth-offset-much-of-the-impact-of-greater-coal-and-oil-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Global CO2 emissions rose less than initially feared in 2022 as clean energy growth offset much of the impact of greater coal and oil use"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Risk of runaway emissions growth from shift to coal amid global energy crisis fails to materialise as renewables, EVs, heat pumps, efficiency and other factors reined in CO2 rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rose by under 1% in 2022 \u2013 less than initially feared \u2013 as the growth of solar, wind, EVs, heat pumps and energy efficiency helped limit the impacts of increased use of coal and oil amid the global energy crisis, according to new IEA analysis published today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the rise in emissions last year was far smaller than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/global-co2-emissions-rebounded-to-their-highest-level-in-history-in-2021\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the exceptional jump<\/a> of over 6% in 2021, emissions still remain on an unsustainable growth trajectory, calling for stronger actions to accelerate the clean energy transition and move the world onto a path towards meeting its energy and climate goals, according to the new analysis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/co2-emissions-in-2022\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>CO2 Emissions in 2022<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>The report is the first in a new series, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/topics\/global-energy-transitions-stocktake\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Global Energy Transitions Stocktake<\/em><\/a>, which will bring together the IEA\u2019s latest analysis in one place, making it freely accessible in support of the first Global Stocktake in the lead-up to the COP28 Climate Change Conference in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global energy-related CO2 emissions grew in 2022 by 0.9%, or 321 million tonnes, reaching a new high of more than 36.8 billion tonnes, according to the report<em>.<\/em> The rise in emissions was significantly slower than global economic growth of 3.2%, signalling a return to a decade-long trend that was interrupted in 2021 by the rapid and emissions-intensive economic rebound from the Covid crisis. Extreme weather events including droughts and heatwaves, as well as an unusually large number of nuclear power plants being offline, contributed to the rise in emissions. But an additional 550 million tonnes of emissions were avoided by increased deployment of clean energy technologies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe impacts of the energy crisis didn\u2019t result in the major increase in global emissions that was initially feared \u2013 and this is thanks to the outstanding growth of renewables, EVs, heat pumps and energy efficient technologies. Without clean energy, the growth in CO2 emissions would have been nearly three times as high,\u201d said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. \u201cHowever, we still see emissions growing from fossil fuels, hindering efforts to meet the world\u2019s climate targets. International and national fossil fuel companies are making record revenues and need to take their share of responsibility, in line with their public pledges to meet climate goals. It\u2019s critical that they review their strategies to make sure they\u2019re aligned with meaningful emissions reductions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CO2 emissions from coal grew by 1.6% as the global energy crisis continued to spur a wave of gas-to-coal switching in Asia, and to a lesser degree in Europe. While the increase in coal emissions was only around one-quarter of 2021\u2019s rise, it still far exceeded the last decade\u2019s average growth rate. The increase in emissions from coal more than offset the 1.6% decline in emissions from natural gas as supply continued to tighten following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine and as European businesses and citizens responded with efforts to cut their gas use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CO2 emissions from oil grew even more than those from coal, increasing by 2.5% but still remaining below pre-pandemic levels. Around half of the year-on-year increase in oil\u2019s emissions came from aviation as air travel continued to rebound from pandemic lows.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sonnenseite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IEA_CO2-Emmissionen-2022.jpg\" alt=\"IEA.org\" class=\"wp-image-89481\" width=\"289\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sonnenseite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IEA_CO2-Emmissionen-2022.jpg 413w, https:\/\/www.sonnenseite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IEA_CO2-Emmissionen-2022-221x300.jpg 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">IEA.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>China\u2019s emissions were broadly flat in 2022 as strict Covid-19 measures and declining construction activity led to weaker economic growth and reductions in industrial and transport emissions. The European Union\u2019s emissions fell by 2.5%, thanks to record deployment of renewables helping ensure the use of coal was not as high as some observers had anticipated. A mild start to the European winter and energy savings measures in response to Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine also contributed. In the United States, emissions grew by 0.8% as buildings increased their energy consumption to cope with extreme temperatures. Excluding China, emissions from Asia\u2019s emerging and developing economies increased by 4.2%, reflecting their rapid economic and energy demand growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The global CO2 emissions numbers in the report are based on the IEA\u2019s detailed region-by-region and fuel-by-fuel analysis, drawing on the latest official national data and publicly available energy, economic and weather data.
