Fuel cells set new runtime record

The German research center Forschungszentrum Jülich has set a new record for solid oxide fuel cell technology (SOFC). Since 2007, a SOFC-stack is continuously operating under real-life conditions.

Recently it passed the 10-year mark and thereby set a new record for the continuous runtime of fuel cell stacks. The material system of this stack was selected within a joint research project and equates to the fuel cell technology utilized by Solidpower.

Solidpower (back then still under the name of SOFCpower and HTceramix) worked together with the researchers in Jülich on the forward-looking anode-supported cell technology. These cells are operated at lower temperatures and allow for the use of low-cost materials. The material system of the record-setting cells in Jülich is also used in the current fuel cell technology of Solidpower.

These ceramic high-temperature fuel cells are very efficient and proved their extraordinary longevity at the Jülich laboratory. They’re ideal for applications in stationary energy generation in residential and commercial buildings. Solidpower has industrially advanced the technology used at Forschungszentrum Jülich and applies the second generation of the anode-supported technology to its products. The test in Jülich was started within the EU-project REAL-SOFC, which was aimed at increasing the lifetime of solid oxide fuel cells.

„Ten years ago the SOFC-technology started its journey from the lab to a commercial product. Today, in form of our Bluegen, we can offer our customers a high-quality, highly efficient micro power station to generate electricity.” said Alberto Ravagni, CEO of Solidpower. “We sincerely congratulate Forschungszentrum Jülich for this groundbreaking research success. The fuel cell technology has once more demonstrated its longevity and maturity for the market. The cooperation between Forschungszentrum Jülich and Solidpower is very valuable for both sides.”
