10 million people benefiting from SunnyMoney solar lights

Our end of year results are in and we’re excited to announce that SunnyMoney, our awesome social enterprise, has had another record breaking year. A massive thanks to all our supporters, ambassadors, partners, staff and customers who have helped ensure the last 12 months were the brightest since records began.

A massive thanks to all our supporters, ambassadors, partners, staff and customers who have helped ensure the last 12 months were the brightest since records began.

Your support means there are now 10 million people benefiting from solar lights sold by SunnyMoney, with other organisations reaching millions more. This means that families in Africa will save over £200 million, create an extra two billion hours of study-time and avert 900,000 tonnes of CO2.

Our teams in Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia have worked phenomenally hard, but this success could not have happened without your help. If you’ve ever donated, told a friend about us or even shared a post, thank you. You’ve played a part in the African solar revolution.

What’s even more exciting is that across the whole continent, a whopping 50 million people are now accessing safe clean solar lights. SunnyMoney’s lights account for one fifth of all those sold, making it the biggest seller of solar lights on the continent.

But of course, 50 million is just the tip of the iceberg. It leaves a further 550 million people without access to light. That’s over half a billion who rely on expensive and polluting alternatives like candles and kerosene lamps, in Africa alone.

Which makes us even more determined to face the challenges ahead!

Because light really is the cornerstone of development, of opportunity and of prosperity. With light, anything is possible. It represents the first rung on the energy ladder and the most cost-effective approach to universal energy access.

Which is why we have made a commitment to continue to innovate, to provide a voice for our customers and to build the alliance needed to eradicate the kerosene lamp by the end of the decade.

We need help to continue this success. NGOs, social enterprises, entrpreneurs, governments; we have an economical and scalable decentralised energy solution that is helping millions of people already. Can you help us spread this even further? Please contacttessa.kipping@solar-aid.org to find out how to be a solar partner.

We would also like to say a massive thank you to our partners who’ve played a huge role in this milestone. The likes of Google and Virgin, but most notably our founding company Solarcentury, who continue to donate 5% of their profits to help light up Africa.

Now imagine what the world would look like if every company did the same? If you want to join ‘the 5% club’ please email tessa.kipping@solar-aid.org
