Trump scores another own goal

US President Trump is scoring one own goal after another, not only with his customs policy, but even more so with his climate policy.

The US President claims to want to help the US economy, but in reality he is damaging it because his policies are backward-looking rather than forward-looking. This is the main reason why his party lost all of the recent local elections.

Trump is obsessed with the past and oblivious to the future. This is most clearly demonstrated by his coal policy. He just spoke of ‘wonderful coal’. As the son of a coal merchant, I can say that coal policy was a great help to the economy after the Second World War. Germany owes its post-war economic miracle to coal. But we have since learned that coal is the number one climate killer and that we must therefore phase it out as quickly as possible.

England was the first industrialised country to do so, and Germany is currently following suit. Even India and China, with their billions of people and their need to catch up in terms of economic development, have decided to phase out coal and switch to renewable energies, and are currently in the process of doing so.

But Donald Trump knows better than the entire scientific community. Like all populists, he despises scientific findings. As a result, however, his MAGA policy (‘Make America great again’) is becoming a policy of ‘Make America small’. This policy is damaging to the US economy because it is not in step with the times.

This is proven by the fact that not a single country withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement after the US left for the second time. On the contrary, more and more money is being invested in renewable energies worldwide. It is already completely clear that the future belongs to renewables. Even in the US, more money is being invested in renewables than in fossil fuels.

Trump’s policies are influenced by paid ‘scientists’ who are in the service of the old energy industry, especially the notorious ‘Global Climate Coalition,’ which is financed by US oil companies. They also influence the major media in the US.

But the success of renewables – even in the USA – is easy to explain: they are already significantly cheaper than coal, gas, oil or even nuclear energy. This fact will soon be stronger than Donald Trump and his backward-looking energy policy. The truth can be concealed for a while, but not forever. In the next presidential election, US voters can ensure that America rejoins the Paris Climate Agreement and adopts a forward-looking energy and climate policy.

The future belongs to renewables. The more Trump scores own goals, the more he himself promotes this change.
