100% Renewable Energy Must be The Immediate Answer to Multiple Crises
27 June was World Renewable Energy Day (WorldREnewDay), which was launched in 2019 to celebrate renewable energy and its potential to benefit people and communities around the world.
Renewable energy has the potential to create a more peaceful, just, equal and participatory world without climate change.
Renewable energy are the main tool to achieve the climate goals and protect livable conditions on our planet, while they can provide universal energy access at affordable cost.
The global climate crisis is getting more serious every day, heat waves, flats and other extreme weather course already today countless human lives. The current geopolitical situation has once again demonstrated to the world that countries relying on fossil fuels imported from other world regions are highly vulnerable.
But: the solutions to these crises are today not just a vision, but they are reality. Renewable energy, after all solar power and wind energy, together with power storage, are today practically everywhere available. And they are cheap. In addition, all technologies are known which are necessary for an entire renewable energy supply across all sectors.
However, although some countries are making good progress, there is still too much delay in the transformation, nationally as well as on the International level. Why the recent conference in Santa Marta, Colombia, has started a process to phase out fossil fuels completely, the most recent UN Climate Change Conference SB64 in Bonn has again not paved the way for a renewable future, not sending a signal that the climate crisis will be stopped.
Stefan Gsänger, WWEA Secretary General and member of the Executive Committee of the Global 100% Renewable Energy Platform: As the climate crisis escalates and the fossil fuel crisis impacts people worldwide, our mission is clear: we must highlight the only real answer to these existential threats. Humanity must transition as quickly as possible to a 100% renewable energy supply. This will lift people out of poverty and create a more just world. Incremental increases in renewable energy are not enough. The new paradigm must be 100% renewable energy globally, across all sectors – now.
